Sutra
परस्परोपग्रहो जीवानाम्॥२१॥
Meaning
जीवों का परस्पर उपकार है अर्थात् जीव कारणवश एक दूसरे का उपकार करते हैं। जैसे- स्वामी सेवक का सेवक स्वामी का, गुरु शिष्य का और शिष्य गुरु का ॥२१॥

भावार्थ

आपस में एक दूसरे की सहायता करना जीवों का उपकार है। जैसे स्वामी धन वगैरह के द्वारा अपने सेवक का उपकार करता है और सेवक हित की बात कहकर और अहित से बचाकर स्वामी का उपकार करता है । इसी तरह गुरु उचित उपदेश देकर शिष्य का उपकार करता है और शिष्य गुरु की आज्ञा के अनुसार आचरण करके गुरु का उपकार करता है। उपकार का प्रकरण होते हुए भी इस सूत्र में जो उपग्रह पद दिया है वह यह बतलाने के लिए दिया है कि पहले सूत्र में बतलाए गए सुख – दुःख आदि भी जीवकृत उपकार हैं। अर्थात् एक- दूसरे जीव को सुख-दुःख भी देता है और जीवन मरण में भी सहायक होता है ॥२१॥ Reference:TatvarthaSutra_KailashChand_Shastri_तत्वार्थसूत्र पंडित कैलाशचंद्र शास्त्री

English Meaning:

The function of the souls (jiva) is to help one another. The word ‘paraspara’ means reciprocity of action. ‘Parasparopa- graha’ means rendering help to one another. That is the help rendered by the souls (jiva) to one another. What is it? It is mutual help as between the master and the servant, and the teacher and the taught. The master renders help to the servant by giving him money. And the servant serves the master by doing him good and protecting him from the evil. The preceptor teaches what is good here and in the next world (birth) and makes his disciples follow his teachings. And the disciple benefits his preceptor by following him and by his devoted service. What is the purpose of the repetition of the word ‘upagraha”? Taking cue from the previous sutra, it indicates that living beings are also the cause of pleasure (sukha), suffering (duḥkha), living (jivita), and death (marana) of one another. Questions and Answers: शङ्का -समाधान

Answer  स्वामी – नौकर, आचार्य शिष्य आदि भाव से जो वृत्ति होती है, उसको परस्पर उपग्रह कहते हैं, जैसे स्वामी अपने धन का त्याग करके सेवक का उपकार करता है और सेवक स्वामी के हित प्रतिपादन और अहित के प्रतिषेध द्वारा उसका उपकार करता है। आचार्य उभयलोक हितकारी मार्ग दिखाकर तथा हितकारी क्रिया का अनुष्ठान कराकर शिष्यों का उपकार करते हैं और शिष्य गुरु से उपकार करते हैं।

Answer : चारों अजीव द्रव्यों का दूसरे का उपग्रह जैसे सान्ततिक है, क्या इसी प्रकार आत्मा के भी पर का उपकारत्व है अथवा कोई दूसरी विधि है, ऐसा पूछने पर आचार्य महाराज ने यह सूत्र कहा है। ( रा. वा. उ. २१) इस प्रकार पहले अजीवकृत उपकार को दिखाकर अब जीवकृत उपकार को दिखाने के लिए यह सूत्र कहा गया है।
